Attorney General Holder Comments on Marijuana Legalization

This article in the Huffington Post, entitled “Eric Holder ‘Cautiously Optimistic’ About Marijuana Legalization,” reports on a new interview with the U.S. Attorney General discussing his latest views on marijuana reform.  Holder spoke with The Huffington Post on Friday, April 11, 2014.  According to the article, Holder is “cautiously optimistic” about how legal developments in Washington and Colorado following the legalization of marijuana in those states.   Holder has directed the Justice Department to permit the state legalization of marijuana to move forward and has issued guidance to federal prosecutors that is intended to open up banking access for pot shops that are legal in their states.  This blog has written articles on other important developments in criminal law under Holder.  According to the article, Holder’s view stands in contrast to the views expressed by Michele Leonhart, the head of the Drug Enforcement administration, who criticized President Obama for comparing marijuana to alcohol and allowing state legalization to proceed unfettered.
